New Delhi. Google has announced that it will soon add end-to-end encryption to its email service Gmail. With this, users will get another layer of data security. Encrypted email is currently in beta and limited to Google Workspace Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, and Standard Education accounts. Those wishing to avail the service need to sign up for the Client Side Encryption (CSE) beta and fill out an application. The last date for submission of application is January 20, 2023.
As reported by Bleeping Computer, CSE was already available to users on Google Drive, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Google Meet and Google Calendar.

Once it’s enabled, Gmail will begin encrypting data in your email body and attachments, including inline images. However, the header, timestamp and recipient list of the email will not be encrypted. You will also be able to toggle CSE on individual emails by clicking the lock icon next to the ‘recipients’ field.

This feature is currently not available to users with ‘Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Education Fundamentals, Frontline, and Nonprofits, Legacy G Suite Basic, and Business’ accounts.
Not only this, at present this personal Google account is also not available for users. Google says that the company will present it to the public in 2023. Announcing the beta, Google said in a blog post that it will help strengthen the privacy of users’ data. Google says that the client-side encryption feature will be turned off by default.

Apart from this, the report of 9to5Google has revealed that Google is all set to add its Gmail and Calendar app to WearOS. This means that these apps will soon be available on Google smartwatches like Watch4, Watch5, Pixel Watch and some other Wear OS-powered smartwatches.
