Ultra-Orthodox Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) said Tuesday that he forgave white supremacy before quickly correcting the slip of the tongue to say he condemned it, but people on the Internet swoon mercilessly anyway.
“Paging Dr. Freud,” cracked one Twitter user.
That Johnson made his mistake in an interview with fellow rightie Maria Bartiromo on Fox Business made it worse. One jokester imagined Bartiromo’s response: “Jeez, remember the ‘dog whistle,’ Ron, like we practiced!”
Johnson’s record in the race is problematic. In a 2020 interview, he declined to condemn the Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse, who killed two Black Lives Matters protesters. Johnson said that “justice has been served” when Rittenhouse was acquitted.
Christine Newman-Ortiz, executive director of immigration rights group Vosses de la Frontera, said in August that Johnson’s exaggerated comments about border security are intended to “align with Trump and try to stoke hatred and division.”
