India has won a total of 6 medals in these Games with 3 gold medals so far and all the medals have come in weightlifting. India has now reached the sixth position in the medal table of Commonwealth Games 2022. Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa and Canada are ahead of India.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that Sunday was full of golden achievements for India in the Commonwealth Games. Weightlifter Achinta Sheuly won the third gold and sixth medal for India on the third day of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Earlier on Sunday, Jeremy Lalrinnunga created history by winning the gold medal in the weightlifting event of 67 kg. He became the first male athlete from India to win a gold medal in Birmingham.
Twenty-year-old Indian weightlifter Achinta Sheuly lifted 143 kg in the snatch round and 170 kg in the clean and jerk round in the men’s 73 kg weight category. In this way, he won the gold medal for India by lifting a total weight of 313 kg. This is also a record in Commonwealth Games. Achinta now holds Commonwealth Games record in snatch round, Commonwealth record in clean and jerk round and also Commonwealth record in total weight. Achinta was followed by Hidayat Mohammed of Malaysia in second place.
On Saturday, India had won four medals in weightlifting before Achinta Sheuly and Jeremy Lalrinnunga were among the medal winners for India till the third day of the Commonwealth Games. Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal, while Sanket Sardar and Bindiyarani Devi won the silver and Gururaja Pujari won the bronze.
The Australian women’s cricket team has secured a ticket for the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in women’s cricket. In this event, the Kangaroo team has reached the semi-finals by winning both the first matches. In the first match of Group A, Australia beat India by 3 wickets in a struggling match and registered a 9-wicket win against Barbados in the match played on Sunday. With these two victories, the Australian women’s cricket team reached the semi-finals, while another team from this group will play the semi-finals, it is yet to be decided. From this event, Pakistan’s team has been out after losing both its first matches.
In the Commonwealth Games 2022, India defeated Pakistan by 8 wickets in their second match. Batting first, in the rain-affected match, Pakistan set a target of 100 runs in 18 overs to win against India. In reply, thanks to Smriti Mandhana’s stormy half-century innings of 63 runs, India easily achieved the target of victory in 11 overs and four balls. This is India’s first win in Group A, while Pakistan is out after losing the second match in a row. India’s third and last match in Group A is against Barbados on Wednesday. If India is successful in winning this match then it will qualify for the semi-finals. In this match, Mandhana has joined Virat Kohli’s special club with his half-century. Mandhana has become the first Indian woman player to score 1000 runs while chasing the target in T20 on the basis of this innings, while in men this record is in the name of former Indian captain Virat Kohli. With this victory of Team India, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur has left behind former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in terms of winning most matches in T20 cricket.
India’s 42nd win in T20 cricket under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur, while the men’s team won 41 matches under Dhoni’s captaincy. In women’s cricket, England’s Charlotte Edwards (68) and Australia’s Meg Lanning (64) are ahead of Harmanpreet Kaur.
In other events of the Commonwealth Games, the Indian men’s table tennis team will face Nigeria in the semi-finals. On the other hand, Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen managed to make it to the quarterfinals of the women’s 50kg lightweight category with a brilliant performance against Mozambique’s Helena Ismail Bagao. The Indian badminton team moved a step closer to retaining their Commonwealth title with a 3-0 win over South Africa in the mixed event. Indian pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Sumeeth Reddy registered a resounding victory in the doubles round. The Indian men’s hockey team made an impressive start with a 11-0 win over Ghana in their first match.
Shikhar Dhawan has once again been given the command of Team India going on tour to Zimbabwe. A 15-man squad has also been announced for the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe. Some key players have been rested for this series. These include Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant. Also, Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Shami are also not in the team. Dhawan recently captained the Indian team in the ODI series against the West Indies and made a 3-0 clean sweep in ODIs for the first time on Caribbean soil. Fast bowler Deepak Chahar has returned to the ODI team for the Zimbabwe tour. He got injured during IPL 2022 and was away from cricket since then. India beat hosts West Indies by 68 runs in the first T20 International to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. In the match played at Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad on Friday, India made a challenging score of 190 runs for 6 wickets, batting first after losing the toss. Captain Rohit Sharma played a brilliant half-century innings of 64 runs. Dinesh Karthik scored an unbeaten 41 explosive runs. Alzarri Joseph took two wickets for West Indies. In response to the target of 191 runs for victory, the West Indies team could only score 122 runs for 8 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Shamar Brooks scored the highest 20 runs. For India, Arshdeep Singh, R Ashwin and Ravi Bishnoi took two wickets each while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja took one wicket each. For India, captain Rohit Sharma also made a world record with a half-century. Rohit has again become the highest run-scorer in T20 cricket. He has overtaken New Zealand’s Martin Guptill.
Team India will play a 3-3 match T20 series against Australia and South Africa at home before the T20 World Cup 2022. Along with this, 3 ODIs will also be played against South Africa. The Indian team will play T20 matches against Australia on 20 September in Mohali, 23 September in Nagpur and 25 September in Hyderabad. T20 matches will be played against South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram on 28 September, Guwahati on 1 October and Indore on 3 October. India will then play 3 ODIs against South Africa in Ranchi on 6 October, Lucknow on 9 October and Delhi on 11 October.
And finally….Man of the match Tabrez Shamsi slaying 5 wickets as South Africa beat hosts England by 90 runs in the third and final T20I in Southampton to take the series 2-1 . In response to the target of 191 runs for victory, the entire team of England was reduced to 101 runs in 16 overs and four balls.
