New Delhi. Cricket’s efforts to be a part of the Olympics have got a big boost. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has included cricket among the nine shortlisted sports that will be reviewed for inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Last month, the Organizing Committee of Los Angeles 2028 had asked the ICC to present its side. However, when the ICC will give its presentation regarding this, that date has not been decided yet. A final decision on the inclusion of cricket in the Olympics is expected in the second quarter of 2023. At that time, the IOC will have an important meeting in Mumbai.
Cricket will compete with sports such as baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, break dancing, karate, kickboxing, squash and motorsport for a place in the Olympics. This February, the IOC released a list of 28 sports to be part of Los Angeles, focusing on youth. At the same meeting, a lengthy discussion took place to evaluate new potential sports and see if he could fit into the 2028 Olympics.
Depends on host country
There is no limit to the number of new games the IOC can add to the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Simply, in order to participate in the Olympics, certain conditions have to be fulfilled. The most important of the conditions that the IOC will look into before including the new Games in the Olympics will be the cost of hosting the Games and the complexity of its organization. Second, to include the best athletes and sports that put the health and safety of players first. The third condition would be a game that has global appeal and in which the host country is also interested.
