New Delhi. The Modi government is preparing to make the existing law related to Tobacco Prohibition Law more strict in the monsoon session of Parliament itself. In order to make the Tobacco Prohibition Act more strict, preparations are on to bring an amendment bill in the Parliament by the Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. According to a senior official of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Central Government can introduce the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Prohibition Amendment Bill in Parliament anytime. This amendment bill can be introduced in Parliament after the approval of the cabinet. Earlier, the Government of India had passed the National Tobacco Control Act in May 2003.
The central government is going to make many changes through amendments in this bill. Now smoking zones or areas in public places will be abolished. Open sale of cigarettes will be completely banned. Cigarettes will be sold only with a warning package. Along with this, advertisements of tobacco products on TV and print will also be banned.
Tobacco prohibition law will be tightened
Along with this, the provision of fine and imprisonment for selling tobacco to a minor will be changed. At present, selling any kind of tobacco or any substance containing it to a minor is a violation of section 77 of the Children’s Justice Act 2015. Under this law, there is also a provision for imprisonment of up to 7 years and a fine of up to one lakh rupees for the accused.
Companies will no longer be able to woo the youth
After amending this law, the tactics used by tobacco companies to woo teenagers and youth will also be stopped. Recently, the Central Government had issued new instructions regarding cigarettes and other tobacco products (packaging and labeling). According to the instructions issued by the Ministry of Health, now a more stern warning will be written on tobacco products with photos. Now it will be mandatory to write tobacco consumption i.e. premature death in capital letters on cigarette packets. The new rules will come into effect from December 1, 2022.
