New Delhi. Tata Group’s airline Air India has decided that it will allow its pilots to fly till the age of 65. It has been told that the airline is working on its fleet expansion plan. Air India pilots still retire at the age of 58.
The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) allows pilots to fly till the age of 65. It is also the practice in most airlines of the aviation industry that pilots can fly aircraft till the age of 65 years.
Apart from this, the idea is going on in Air India to buy more than 200 more aircraft. Of these, 70 per cent can be narrow-body aircraft. This information has been published by Business Today on its website quoting aviation industry sources.
It is important for future plans
According to the report, the airline’s documents state that it is necessary to meet the workforce requirement in view of future expansion plans for its fleet. “To meet our requirement, it is proposed to extend the services of our existing trained pilots in Air India on contract basis for 5 years after retirement up to 65 years.”

It said that a committee consisting of officials of Human Resources (HR) Department, Operations Department and Flight Safety Department would be constituted to examine the eligibility of pilots retiring in the next two years. This committee will be responsible for reviewing the past records of pilots with regard to discipline, flight safety and vigilance. After a detailed review, this committee will recommend the shortlisted names to the Head of Human Resources Department for award of contracts after retirement.
Contract can be extended after 5 years
It stated that “the contract will be issued for a period of 5 years, extendable up to 65 years.” It also states that the committee will consider extending it up to the age of 65 years after examining their performance on completion of five years of satisfactory service at the age of 63 years.
