India is a country of diversities. Here you will find different types of beliefs, customs in every state, which people have been following for centuries. In today’s time, when people have become more practical and are forgetting their ways, then they may find these customs strange, but those who believe in these customs, they still follow them from the heart. One such custom takes place in Karnataka where the marriage of dead people is done.
According to the report of NDTV, on July 28, a couple named Shobha and Chandappa were married in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. This marriage was like normal weddings, after following all the customs, the only difference was that Shobha and Chandappa have died for 30 years (man-woman married 30 years after death). Actually, in Karnataka a practice called Pretha Kalyanam is followed in which the dead are married.
People who have died at the time of birth are married
This belief is still followed in many parts of Karnataka and Kerala. Under this belief, marriage is done for those people who died at birth or were born dead. In this way the people here do this to pay respect to the souls of the dead. Recently on Twitter, a person named Annie Arun shared a complete thread related to this belief on his Twitter. He told that he has attended one such marriage. With this, he shared videos in which people are seen performing wedding rituals.
I’m attending a marriage today. You might ask why it deserves a tweet. Well groom is dead actually. And bride is dead too. Like about 30 years ago.
And their marriage is today. For those who are not accustomed to traditions of Dakshina Kannada this might sound funny. But (contd)

Unmarried people cannot see this marriage
The person told that under this tradition, the families of the dead go to each other’s house and first do the engagement and then do the wedding rituals. He told that children and unmarried people cannot see this marriage. People in the family also come to bless the newly married couples. Mangalsutra is also worn in marriage and Kanyadan is also done. This post of Arun is becoming increasingly viral and it has got more than 35 lakh likes.
