With the rise of streaming services, binge-watching has become a bigger deal in recent decades. Before we had Netflix, Amazon, HBO and Disney+, people were forced to use Blockbuster’s CD/DVD discs to watch full seasons of their favorite shows.
Nowadays, there are many streaming sites where you can pay 10-20 bucks and enjoy your favorite TV shows and/or movies. But there is a catch. Actually, there are a few catches, to be honest. You see, our bodies are not meant for this much satisfaction, and after 10-15 episodes of binging, you start to realize that something is off about you.
What happens to your body when you binge watch your favorite series?
1. Binging is addictive
That’s right, you’re so invested in the intricate details of a multi-season show that you forget about everything else, including loved ones, food, water, and sometimes work.
2. Heart problems
Our bodies need movement to stay in top shape, so sitting in one place for hours on end is not the best idea. It is a well-known cause of various heart problems and sometimes aneurysms.
3. Eyes are strained
Our eyes are a natural wonder that can zoom in, out, shift focus, and see thousands of colors, and yet, if they stay on for 10 hours straight, you’ll surely regret your life choices.
4. A chaotic sleep schedule
Sleep schedule is very important for any person. You work all day, have some beer in the evening, sleep for 8-9 hours and that’s it. May you live happily and long. But when you add overwatching to the formula, it all gets screwed up. You’re still working all day, but now you get 4 hours of sleep until you realize all you want to do is watch Lucifer’s Adventures in Los Angeles at 4am/ it messes up your entire week. or even month.
5. Depression and anxiety
Incessant binging usually means the person has nothing better to do in life. They’re a lonely soul whose only companions are the actors inside the box, and that’s really sad. Imagine stepping into roles where you consider them your friends, and then BAM! Your favorite show has been canceled without any reason.
6. Skin problems
If you don’t ping your stuff while sunbathing on the beach, your skin won’t be getting the vitamins and all the good stuff it needs. Some have adapted to a caveman-like living environment, but there are still honest-to-goodness freelancers who can’t survive another pandemic, seeing friends for the 20th time and being confined to four walls.
Where there is lack of exercise and poor diet, diabetes is more likely to occur. If you’re lucky, it’ll be a few extra pounds of fat, but if you keep eating those cookies at 3 a.m. every night, you can bet your fat will have bottom-line effects.
8. Numb Butt Syndrome
The human butt is not just a comfortable cushion, it is made up of muscles. And you know what happens to muscles that are rarely used? They are draining, especially when all you do is sit on your bum all day and watch all 900+ episodes of One Piece. Trust me, I’ve been there. “Numb Butt” Syndrome is no laughing matter. Stand up and do some jumping jacks once in a while, okay? Thank me later.
